Cyber Essentials: A Beginner's Checklist for Online Safety

In a world buzzing with connectivity, ensuring your online safety is as vital as your morning coffee. I present to you the ultimate Cyber Essentials checklist, tailor-made for those with zero previous IT experience.

1. Password Power Play:

Ever used “password123” as your shield? Time for an upgrade! Mix it up, and throw in some Uppercase, and lowercase, numbers and special characters. Make it as long as you can because in cybersecurity size does matter. Do this and voilà – you’ve got a password that even your nosy neighbours couldn’t crack.

2. Software Safeguarding:

Updates – they’re not just annoying pop-ups. Updates are like the immune system of your digital device. They patch vulnerabilities, fix bugs, and keep your system healthy and secure. Neglecting updates is like inviting a cyber cold – unnecessary and easily avoidable.

3. Phishing Filters 101:

Phishing isn’t just for seafood lovers. Phishing emails are the catfish of the internet – slippery and potentially disastrous. Falling for their tricks can lead to identity theft or worse. Think before you click and always check the email source (email address)

4. Antivirus Armoury:

Your antivirus software is the digital knight guarding your castle against malware dragons and Trojan horses. Investing in a good antivirus program is crucial for maintaining the safety and security of your digital devices.

5. Wi-Fi Wizardry:

Your Wi-Fi network is the gateway to your digital kingdom. If it’s not secure, you’re practically handing out invites to unwanted digital neighbours. Update your router’s firmware, change default login credentials, and use a strong Wi-Fi password. Keep an eye out for my next blog on Wi-Fi Safety with more details.

6. Backup Ballet:

The backup ballet isn’t just about protecting against data loss; it’s about preserving your digital legacy. Accidents happen. Phones get lost, damaged, or stolen. Regular backups ensure that even if the worst occurs, your data remains safe. Photos, messages, and other sentimental files are irreplaceable. Regular backups ensure that your cherished memories are preserved, even if your phone decides to play hide and seek.

7. Social Media Shields:

Your social media accounts are your digital diaries, filled with personal anecdotes and cherished memories. Review and set your profile visibility to a level that suits your comfort. Decide who can see your posts, friend requests, and personal information. After all, who wants unwanted eyes peeking into their life’s story? Refrain from sharing sensitive information, like your home address or phone number, publicly. Use direct messages for private conversations.

8. Two-Factor Tango:

Two-factor authentication is the extra layer of security that turns your digital dance into a Tango of unbreakable grace. Email accounts often serve as a gateway to many other services. Protecting your email with 2FA is crucial. Any account related to your finances, including banking, investment, and credit card accounts, should have 2FA enabled this also includes your shopping accounts such as Amazon where you might have your credit card details saved for ease.

You’ve not only aced your crash course in Cyber Essentials but also fortified your digital realm against potential threats. With this detailed virtual checklist, you’re not merely an internet user anymore! Happy secure web-surfing!
