This Tech Event Could Change Your Career

If you’re in tech, you’ve probably seen the announcements, the hashtags, and the packed schedules – London Tech Week is just around the corner. And yes, I’ll be attending.

Attending tech events like London Tech Week isn’t just for seasoned professionals. It’s a golden opportunity for anyone eager to break into the tech industry. Whether you’re a student, a career changer, or simply tech curious, these events can open doors you didn’t even know existed.

1. Real Humans, Real Conversations

We spend so much of our time behind screens. Be it coding, writing, analysing, strategising. Attending events pulls you out of that digital bubble. You get to:

  • Meet people behind the ideas: Whether it’s someone launching a startup or leading AI research, nothing beats face to face connections.
  • Network without the awkwardness: Everyone’s there for the same reason – to learn, connect, and collaborate. You’d be surprised how natural it feels when you’re surrounded by people geeking out over the same things you love.

2. A Front Row Seat to What’s Next

Tech moves fast and if you’re not actively learning, you’re falling behind. Events like London Tech Week offer:

  • Live demos and product launches
  • Insights from thought leaders
  • Hands-on workshops and case studies

Even if a session isn’t directly in your domain, exposure to trends like quantum computing, green tech, or ethical AI can spark new ideas you never saw coming.

3. Navigating the Event: Tips & Tricks

  • Set Clear Goals: Determine what you want to achieve. Be it learning about a specific technology, meeting certain individuals, or exploring job opportunities.
  • Research Ahead: Review the agenda and identify sessions that align with your interests. Use the event’s app or website to plan your schedule.
  • Prepare Your Introduction: Have a concise pitch about who you are and what you’re looking for. This makes networking more effective.
  • Engage Actively: Ask questions during sessions, participate in discussions, and don’t hesitate to approach speakers or attendees.
  • Follow Up: After the event, connect with the people you met on LinkedIn or via email to maintain the relationship.

4. Inspiration That Doesn’t Come From a Screen

Once you’ve mapped out your game plan, here’s why it’s worth the effort: It’s easy to get tunnel vision in your role. But hearing someone speak passionately about solving real world problems with technology? That energy is infectious.

I’ve walked away from talks with goosebumps, scribbled notes, and a renewed sense of why I chose this path. No blog, YouTube video, or newsletter can replace that feeling of being in the room when something clicks.

5. Networking Guide

  • Be Approachable: Smile and show genuine interest in others.
  • Listen More: People appreciate when you listen attentively; it builds rapport.
  • Attend Social Events: Evening mixers or informal gatherings are great for relaxed conversations.
  • Join Online Communities: Many events have associated online groups: join them to stay connected.

6. A Confidence Boost You Didn’t Know You Needed

Imposter syndrome? Oh, we all feel it.
But attending events reminds you:

  • You know more than you think.
  • You’re part of something much bigger.
  • You belong in the room.

Sometimes, that’s all the motivation you need to keep going or to aim even higher.

7. The Tech Community is Waiting for You

You don’t need to be the loudest voice or the most extroverted person to benefit from events. Just show up with curiosity. Ask a question. Connect with one new person. Attend one panel outside your comfort zone.

It might just change your trajectory.

See You at London Tech Week

Whether you’re a student, an early career techie, or a tech pro – there’s something for you at events like this. I’m planning to attend some talks, take lots of notes, and share my reflections along the way.

If you’re around, let’s connect 👋
And if you’ve been thinking about putting yourself out there more, let this be your sign.

Go. Soak it in. You never know what (or who) you might discover!
